Material Presents: Collin Bradford — Every Rock is a Cloud

Collin Bradford, Temporary Arrangement (Rock 6), 2018

Material is pleased to present Every Rock is a Cloud, a solo exhibition by Utah-based artist Collin Bradford, on view October 24 through November 20, 2026.

Working across video, photography, sculpture, drawing, and other forms, Bradford has developed a practice centered on how we understand and relate to the land we inhabit. His work often examines perception, language, scale, and time, using close observation and subtle interventions to make familiar landscapes and natural processes newly visible.

Every Rock is a Cloud brings together works that consider land, and our human experience within it, through the expansive scale of geologic time. The exhibition grew in part from Bradford's move from the Great Lakes region to Utah, where the exposed geology of the surrounding landscape offered a striking contrast to the environment in which he grew up. Against the backdrop of drought, wildfire, and a changing climate, the visible strata of Utah's mountains prompted Bradford to think differently about permanence and transformation, and about the ways human experience intersects with much longer processes of geological change.

Bradford began drawing rocks as a way to slow down and give them his full attention. The exhibition includes Temporary Arrangement (Rock 6), one of these early drawings, which marks an important shift in his practice. Through this sustained act of looking, seemingly permanent forms reveal themselves as temporary: rocks erode into sand, mountains change and disappear, and matter continually moves from one form into another.

This shift in perception extends throughout Every Rock is a Cloud. In some works, Bradford creates the experience of simultaneously seeing a cloud and a rock, drawing attention to both as temporary arrangements of matter operating at radically different speeds. In others, transparent colored forms alter familiar views of the land, foregrounding geologic activity and disrupting our tendency to understand landscape as static. Across media, Bradford invites viewers to consider the continual movement of matter and the fleeting nature of any particular form.

The exhibition builds on Bradford's longstanding engagement with landscape and the ways we perceive, describe, and locate ourselves within it. By shifting between human and geologic scales, Every Rock is a Cloud offers a different way of seeing forms that can appear permanent and unchanging.

As Bradford writes, "Every stone is fleeting. Every rock is a cloud."

Jorge Rojas, Co-Owner / Co-Director of Material, shares:

"I've followed Collin's work for quite some time, and we're excited to present his first solo exhibition with us at Material. What I find so compelling about his work is the way he asks us to reconsider our sense of time and our relationship to the land. Every Rock is a Cloud brings together ideas long present in his practice—landscape, perception, language, and our place in the natural world—while approaching them through the lens of geologic time. Collin's work invites us to slow down, look more closely, and experience the landscape not as something fixed or permanent, but as something continually changing and becoming."

About the Artist

Collin Bradford has accelerated the sunset (literally), written massive words on the shores of the Great Lakes, and spent days on end staring at rocks. He makes video works, photographs, sculptural objects, drawings, and other artistic forms that explore how we understand and relate to the land we inhabit and how language shapes our understanding of ourselves within it.

Bradford’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in traditional art spaces as well as film and video festivals, including the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, Michigan; the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art; Anthology Film Archives in New York; New Insight at Art Chicago; the Cologne International Video Art Festival; and Channels Video Art Festival in Melbourne, Australia.

He grew up in the Great Lakes region of the United States and currently lives in Utah.
